WHY IN CAIRO

CAIRO, THE HUB OF WORLD TRADE

YOUR WIDE GATE TO MENA- AFRICA

Cairo is the most logical place for a global summit of renewable energy for many reasons first of them is its genius location at the connecting point of Europe, Africa and Asia a few miles away from Suez Canal, the most important logistic corridor of the world transferring more than 30% of the global commodities. Cairo also is the capital and largest city of Egypt, a country that possesses an abundance of land, sunny weather, and high wind speeds, making it a prime location for renewable energy projects.

The genius location of Cairo extends to the renewable energy wealth in Africa where hydropower, solar power, wind and biomass are at their peak. Cairo is connecting with its electricity projects, logistic corridors and trade routes to the depth of Africa.

Cairo is a regional and international hub for business and trade. Hosting a renewable energy convention in Cairo benefits from the city’s proximity and accessibility, modern infrastructure, world-class monetary system, modern communication technology, conference facilities, multilingual labor

Cairo offers a diversity of luxurious amenities, and attractions. It enjoys a rich cultural experience as it is home to many historical and cultural landmarks, such as the Pyramids of Giza, the Egyptian Grand Museum, and the Old Bazaars.

On A Wider Scale

Why Egypt

Egypt besides its access to a tremendous amount of investment opportunities in MENA and Africa, is the largest stand-alone market for renewable energy in the MENA region.

MASSIVE MARKET

Egypt is a huge market for energy because of its growing population, economy, and demand for electricity. Egyptian population has reached almost 110 million inhabitants. The demographic pyramid in Egypt is quite normal with a slight youth bulge. In details, 51.6% of the population are children of less than 15 years old and 55.9% are between 15 – 54 years old. In addition, the country is shifting from agricultural economy to industrial and service economy which requires intensive consumption of power.

Egypt has a total installed capacity of 55 GW, including both conventional and renewable energy sources. Total consumption of Egypt has reached 168TWh in 2022 globally ranking the 24th. Per capita consumption rates are about 1,538 kWh which is by far below global average. Such gap entails enormous potential under an ambitious governmental program to bridge the gap primarily through private sector investment in renewables.

HUGE POTENTIAL

Egypt aims to increase the production of electricity from renewable sources to 20% by 2022 and 42% by 2035, out of which wind should provide 14%, hydropower 1.98%, photovoltaic (PV) 21.3%, concentrating solar power (CSP) 5.52%, and conventional energy sources 57.33% by 2035. This plan is currently under revision with more pretentious plans to reflect 33 percent of energy generated from renewable energy by 2025, 48 percent by 2030, 55 percent by 2035, and 61 percent by 2040. This is believed to be a very optimistic plan. The private sector is expected to deliver most of this capacity.

Egypt is the first country in MENA and Africa to produce electricity from hydropower engines and is among the largest energy producers and suppliers in Africa. Through the mega regional electricity linking and logistic corridor projects, Egypt is a wide gate to investment in Africa and MENA region.

Egypt has several renewable energy projects and initiatives that can serve as examples and inspiration for other countries, such as the Benban Solar Park, the largest solar power installation in the world, with a total capacity of 1.8 gigawatts as well as several wind farms in the Gulf of Suez and the Nile Valley

CLEAR VISION

Egypt implements the Integrated Sustainable Energy Strategy (ISES) 2035, which involves improving energy efficiency, enhancing grid integration, developing a competitive electricity market, and attracting private investments in renewable energy projects. The strategy also includes the establishment of a feed-in tariff scheme, a net metering programme, and a competitive bidding process to support the deployment of renewable energy projects, especially solar and wind.

Egypt is also transforming its energy market by investing in energy efficiency, enhancing grid integration, developing a competitive electricity market, and attracting private investments in renewable energy projects.

Egypt is participating in various regional and international initiatives and partnerships, such as the African Renewable Energy Initiative, the Clean Energy Ministerial, the International Solar Alliance, and the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership, to enhance co-operation and knowledge sharing on renewable energy transition.
